Where are they now? Digital vs. Print

Is it time to ditch the digitals? I think so, and here's why.

Real talk here. Where are your digital files right now? When is the last time you printed a photo of you or your kids or your pet?

When I was growing up, the bottom drawer of the china cabinet was *full* of packets of photos. The kind picked up at KMart or Costco, with the negatives tucked under a paper fold and the photos in a stack behind it. My mother's handwriting on the order form on front. A delightful mystery waiting inside, because you never quite knew what you were going to get. I used to love looking through them, sometimes asking my parents questions about the people and places. Other times just absorbing my story through the snapshots of earlier versions of me.

Now? The photos exist, sure, through the magic of every one of us having a pocket size camera with us 24/7. The thing is, will they ever see the light of day? I've printed a lot of photos of my kids, but I'm guilty too. Oh it's on the to-do list, to organize and print, but it never quite rises to the top of the priority list. We have hard drives and several old cellphones, full of digital images. Our kids will likely never see any of them.

I'm finding the same to be true of the gorgeous galleries of edited family photos I deliver to my clients. They get a look, maybe one chosen for a holiday card, and then they are left to languish as merely a piece of data. More than a few times people have come back to me months later to ask if I still have their images, because they didn't get around to downloading them yet. It's ok, things happen and life is moving a thousand miles an hour and I get it.
